These key-wound mechanical mantel clocks are wound with the provided key once a week. The middle winding arbor winds a spring that powers the time function. The right winding arbor (as you face the clock) winds the spring that powers the quarter-chime function. Lastly, the left winding arbor winds the spring that powers the hour strikes.
