Wall Clocks

Wall clocks offered in our online wall clock store will present with two different movement options, either battery-operated or mechanical wind-up.  Moreover, within these two options, there is a further option for chimes.

Quartz, battery-operated wall clocks usually offer a lower price point, along with lower maintenance costs.  Furthermore, battery-operated clocks make great clock gifts.  However, mechanical wind-up wall clocks are true heirloom timepieces.

Mechanical wall clocks are a much more sophisticated wall clock than a battery-operated style.  Mechanical wall clock movements include either a key-wound movement or a weight-driven movement.  Key-wound wall clocks are a type of mechanical clock that is powered by springs that are wound-up with a key.  Key-wound wall clocks offered in our online wall clock store are usually wound either once a week or every fourteen days.  Weight-driven wall clocks are powered by weights, which you wind up once a week with either a key or by manually pulling the weights up for chain-driven styles.

Although mechanical wall clocks can be powered differently, what is common in them oftentimes is the use of a pendulum.  Besides being a decorative accent, the pendulum in a mechanical wall clock has an important function in that it helps to regulate the speed of the timekeeping.  Without a pendulum in a mechanical wall clock, it would be difficult to accurately measure time.  The parts of a pendulum wall clock include the shaft and the bob.  Raising or lowering the bob on the pendulum shaft can speed the clock movement up or slow it down.  Indeed, the pendulum does much more than just complement the case.  Moreover, wall clocks with a pendulum are what most people usually think of when they shop for a wall clock.

One of the most complementary features of many of our wall clocks is the chiming melodies many are offered with.  Such historic chimes like St. Michael, Westminster, and Whittington are still used today in many traditional chiming wall clocks.  Although these triple chime options are generally reserved for higher price point mechanical wind-up wall clocks, many traditional key-wound wall clocks will still feature the popular Westminster melody.  Battery-operated chiming wall clocks that offer a chiming melody will also generally include this popular Westminster chime as well, and many will also feature a dual chime option.  Mechanical movements will feature a mechanical form of the chimes, and battery-operated movements will present with the electronic form of the clock chime.  We’ve written an article about clock chimes that highlights some of the history and forms of these timeless melodies.   Please refer to the product details for each clock for chime details.
