Clocks are our passion, which is why our Gift of Time Clocks' online store offers nearly every type of clock, and from some of the biggest manufacturers in the world. In this section, we combine all clocks and categories in one place. We include here some ideas on what to look for in each type of clock, with a later focus on what to look for in mechanical clocks and wind-up clocks.
Wall clocks are a broad category that includes chiming, key-wound, oversized, and wrought-iron styles. True heirloom timepieces are key-wound wall clocks. Indeed, these mechanical timepieces will definitely become a cherished family memory. Chiming wall clocks that are quartz battery-operated offer a wider range of price points and can also become a family favorite. Whether it’s a key-wound mechanical wall clock or a quartz chiming wall clock, look for the Westminster chime. Indeed, our section on clock chimes introduces the prayer that’s associated with this chime. Wrought-iron wall clocks are also very popular because they can complement almost any décor or aesthetic. Lastly, large oversized wall clocks offer either contemporary or traditional styles and will complement any wall.
Mantel clocks will feature either a mechanical key-wound or a chiming quartz movement. Key-wound mantel clocks are generally considered to be heirloom-quality timepieces. Indeed, we love the mechanical chimes in key-wound clocks. Yet, whether it’s key-wound or chiming quartz, consider the different styles offered with each. Many mantel clocks fit into either a curved tambor or a square bracket style. There are also contemporary models, such as skeleton clocks, which make wonderful clock gifts.
Cuckoo clocks on our site and in our showroom are made in Germany and include either a one-day, eight-day, or battery-operated movement. One-day cuckoo clocks have good price points and therefore make for great clock gifts. Eight-day cuckoo clocks, however, offer much more convenience because you only have to wind them up once a week. For many people this extra convenience is worth a higher price point. The price points tend to go up with more animation and music. These German cuckoo clocks also make wonderful clock gifts. Popular styles include chalet, hunter’s, beer drinkers, and wood choppers.
Grandfather clocks are considered the ultimate timepiece in our shop. We love the presence they have in a room. Like other clock categories, they also have a wide price point, and higher-end models will include more features. Styles include traditional and contemporary.
Along with skeleton clocks, accent clocks are some of our favorite gift clocks because they are perfect for any occasion. They offer great price points and make great gifts because they can be placed anywhere and in any room. Styles here focus on traditional and rustic presentations, which are perfect for a clock gift. All are sure to complement and accent any room setting.
Mechanical clocks, or wind-up clocks, as some can also be called, are so fascinating to us that we consider them true works of art. Brands such as Howard Miller and Hermle are masters at the art of clockmaking, and we recommend focusing on those clock brands. We love presenting mechanical clocks in our showroom and working on them in our service center because of their history. We are referring here to fine timepieces that are either wound with a key or powered by weights that are wound up. They will usually feature a mechanical chime, and with grandfather clocks and wall clocks, they will likely also feature a pendulum.
Mechanical clocks are either powered by springs or weights for their timekeeping function. Most of the chimes will also be mechanical, as opposed to electronic. This is an advantageous benefit because nothing beats mechanical chimes in our opinion. Look for triple chime options because you will have more choices. Moreover, an automatic night silencer option can also be advantageous.
Mechanical clock movements in many wall clocks and grandfather clocks will feature a pendulum. The pendulum always seems to complete the look of the larger clock cases to us. The pendulums, if included, are very important mechanically and are another visual feature to admire as they reliably go back and forth when running. There are generally wood stick pendulums and more elaborate lyre pendulums. The particular style used is not as important and their ability to regulate the speed of the clock.
Mechanical clocks generally have a higher price point, but they are worth it because they are heirloom timepieces that can last for generations if properly taken care of. Mechanical clocks will indeed need maintenance, and good service technicians can make them run smoothly and last a long time. The heirloom quality that mechanical styles present fashions them as a thoughtful retirement clock gift as well.
Modest selections of key clock types are also featured at our clock shop, and our family loves presenting them in our showroom. Our Wisconsin showroom also houses our Authorized Clock Service Center for brands such as Ridgeway and Howard Miller Clocks.
